Can a Leopard Change Its Spots?
Jeremiah 13:23
Key Text:
“Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.” - Jeremiah 13:23
Introduction
In this verse, God speaks through the prophet Jeremiah, using a powerful analogy to illustrate the sinful condition of Judah. Just as a leopard cannot change its spots, sinners cannot change their nature by their own effort. This raises an important question: If we cannot change ourselves, how can we ever be transformed?
1. The Inability of Man to Change Himself
The leopard is born with its spots, they are a permanent part of its nature. Likewise, we are born with a sinful nature, and no amount of self-improvement can remove the stain of sin.
- Psalm 51:5 - “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.”
- Romans 3:23 - “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Many try to change through good works, religion, or self-discipline, but true transformation cannot come from human effort alone.
2. The Need for Divine Transformation
If we cannot change ourselves, does that mean we are hopeless? No! What is impossible for man is possible with God.
- Ezekiel 36:26 - “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you.”
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 - “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new.”
While we cannot change our own sinful nature, God can give us a new heart through Jesus Christ.
3. The Power of Christ to Change Us
Jesus came to do what we could never do for ourselves—He gives us a new identity.
- John 3:3 - “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
- Titus 3:5 - “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.”
Through Christ’s sacrifice and the work of the Holy Spirit, we are no longer bound by our old nature.
4. Walking in the New Nature
After salvation, we must actively live in the new nature that Christ has given us.
- Romans 12:2 - “Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
- Galatians 5:16 - “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
Though we were once bound to sin, through Christ, we are free to live righteously.
Conclusion
Jeremiah 13:23 reminds us that we cannot change ourselves—but God can. While sin is deeply ingrained in human nature, the grace of Jesus Christ has the power to make us new. If you feel stuck in sin, the answer is not to try harder but to surrender to Christ, who alone can change the heart.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that we cannot change ourselves, but we thank You that through Jesus, we are made new. Transform our hearts, renew our minds, and help us walk in the power of Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
