How Great Thou Art
Psalm 8:3-4
Key Scripture: Psalm 8:3-4 (NIV)
“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?”
Introduction
There are songs that move us, and then there are songs that lift us—songs that carry us straight into the presence of God. How Great Thou Art is one of those songs.
“O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made…”
These words take us on a journey—from the vastness of creation, to the miracle of the cross, and forward to the glory of Christ’s return.
Today, let’s walk through this hymn and the Word of God, and rediscover why we sing:
“How great Thou art!”
Point 1: God’s Greatness Revealed in Creation
“I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed…”
The beauty of nature isn’t random—it’s a divine masterpiece. Whether you’re standing under a night sky or beside the ocean, creation points to a Creator.
Romans 1:20
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen…”
When we see creation, we’re supposed to respond with awe. God’s greatness is not just in His size, but in His detail—the fingerprint on every leaf, the rhythm of every wave.
Point 2: God’s Greatness Revealed in Redemption
“And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in…”
If creation shows us God’s power, the cross shows us His love.
Romans 5:8
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
That’s what makes grace so amazing. The same God who formed the galaxies took on flesh and died for the very people who rebelled against Him.
We didn’t earn it. We don’t deserve it. But He gave it anyway.
“That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.”
How great is our God? He didn’t just create the world—He stepped into it to save it.
Point 3: God’s Greatness Revealed in Glory
“When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart…”
We’re not just looking back—we’re looking forward.
Jesus didn’t just come to die—He’s coming again to reign.
Revelation 21:4
“‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain…’”
One day, every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess. And the greatness of God will be seen by all.
“Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art…”
That’s not just a lyric—it’s a lifestyle.
A soul that sings is a soul that knows God’s greatness in creation, salvation, and future restoration.
Conclusion: Let Your Soul Sing
You may feel small today. You may feel overwhelmed. But lift your eyes.
Look at the stars—He made them.
Look at the cross—He died for you.
Look to the sky—He’s coming again.
And when you take it all in, there’s only one response:
“How great Thou art!”
Closing Prayer
Lord, we stand in awe of You. In creation, we see Your power. In the cross, we see Your love. In the promise of Your return, we find our hope. Let our souls never forget Your greatness. Let our lives reflect Your glory. And let our hearts always sing: “How great Thou art.” In Jesus’ name, Amen.
