God Will Finish What He Started
Philippians 1:6
Scripture: Philippians 1:6 (NIV) - “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Introduction
Life is full of uncertainties, and at times, we may wonder if we will ever become who God has called us to be. We face struggles, setbacks, and seasons of doubt. But Philippians 1:6 gives us a powerful promise—what God starts, He will finish. Our faith journey is not dependent on our strength alone, it is God who is at work in us.
1. God is the One Who Begins the Work
Paul tells the Philippians that God has begun a good work in them. Salvation, spiritual growth, and every good thing in our lives originate from God. We did not choose Him first—He chose us (John 15:16). From the moment we place our faith in Jesus, God begins a transformative work in us.
- We are not self-made Christians, we are God’s workmanship (Ephesians 2:10).
- If God started the work in us, He will not abandon us halfway.
2. God is Continuously Working in Us
Paul assures the Philippians that the work is ongoing—God is carrying it on. Growth in Christ is a process. There will be challenges, but God is shaping us through every trial, lesson, and victory.
- Just as a potter carefully molds the clay, God is shaping our character.
- Sometimes, we may feel like we are stuck, but God is still working behind the scenes.
3. God Will Complete What He Started
The promise does not stop at God simply working in us—Paul declares that God will carry it on to completion. This means our struggles, failures, and weaknesses will not have the final say. God has a purpose for our lives, and He will bring it to fulfillment.
- We may feel like giving up, but God never gives up on us.
- His faithfulness ensures that we will reach the finish line of our spiritual race.
4. The Day of Christ Jesus—Our Ultimate Hope
Paul points to “the day of Christ Jesus,” referring to the return of Christ. This reminds us that our journey with God is not just for this life but for eternity. God is preparing us for something far greater—eternal life with Him.
- Until Jesus returns, God will keep shaping, refining, and growing us.
- Our struggles are temporary, but God’s work in us is eternal.
Conclusion
Philippians 1:6 is a verse of confidence and encouragement. No matter what we face, we can trust that God is not finished with us yet. He started the work, He is continuing the work, and He will complete the work. Our job is to remain faithful, trust in His process, and walk in His grace.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise that You will complete the good work You have started in us. Help us to trust in Your process, even when we do not understand it. Strengthen our faith and remind us that we are in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
