Finding Rest in Jesus

Matthew 11:28-30

Key Text:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:28-30

Introduction:

Life is filled with burdens—stress, worries, pain, and struggles—that often leave us feeling weary and exhausted. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus extends a loving invitation: “Come to me… and I will give you rest.”

This passage teaches us three key truths:

  1. Jesus Invites the Weary
  2. Jesus Offers Rest Through Surrender
  3. Jesus’ Yoke Brings True Freedom

1. Jesus Invites the Weary

Jesus does not call the strong, self-sufficient, or proud—He calls those who are tired, overwhelmed, and burdened.

  • We All Carry Burdens - Whether it’s sin, guilt, stress, or hardships, everyone experiences weariness.
  • Jesus Sees and Cares for the Weary - He does not ignore our struggles, instead, He invites us to bring them to Him.
  • We Must Accept His Invitation - The first step to finding rest is to come to Jesus in faith and surrender.

Application: Are you carrying burdens that you need to bring to Jesus? Are you willing to acknowledge your need for Him and come to Him for rest?

2. Jesus Offers Rest Through Surrender

Jesus says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me.” A yoke was a wooden frame placed on oxen to help them work together. Jesus is inviting us to be yoked with Him, walking in step with Him.

  • Rest Comes Through Trust - We find peace when we trust Jesus instead of relying on our own strength.
  • Learning from Jesus Brings Peace - He is gentle and humble in heart, and His ways lead to peace, not pressure.
  • Rest Is Not the Absence of Work - It is the presence of Jesus in our work and struggles.

Application: True rest is found in walking with Jesus daily and letting Him lead. Are we allowing Jesus to guide us and teach us, or are we trying to do things our own way?

3. Jesus’ Yoke Brings True Freedom

Jesus promises that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Unlike the heavy burdens of sin, legalism, or worldly expectations, Jesus’ yoke brings freedom, peace, and purpose.

  • Jesus Carries the Weight - We don’t have to bear life’s struggles alone, Jesus helps us.
  • Obedience to Jesus Is Not a Burden - Serving Jesus is a joy because He strengthens us.
  • Rest Comes Through Relationship, Not Religion - Jesus offers us grace, not rules and rituals.

Application: Are you carrying unnecessary burdens instead of resting in Jesus’ grace? Are we finding our identity and worth in our performance, or in our relationship with Jesus?

Conclusion:

Jesus’ invitation is simple: “Come to me.” He promises rest for the weary, peace for the anxious, and strength for the weak. The question is: Will you accept His invitation?

Reflection Questions:

  1. What burdens are you carrying that you need to give to Jesus?
  2. Are you trying to carry life’s struggles on your own, or are you walking with Jesus?
  3. How can you experience Jesus’ rest more fully in your life?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, thank You for inviting us to find rest in You. Help us to lay down our burdens and trust You completely. Teach us to walk in step with You, knowing that Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
