Courageous Faith: Stepping into the Unknown with God

Joshua 1:9

Introduction

Fear is something we all face—whether it’s fear of failure, fear of the unknown, or fear of stepping into a new season of life. In Joshua 1:9, God gives a powerful command to Joshua as he prepares to lead Israel into the Promised Land:

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

This verse is not just for Joshua—it is a message for all believers. When God calls us to something greater, He also equips us with His presence, power, and promises.

Today, we will look at three key truths from this passage:

  1. The Command: Be Strong and Courageous
  2. The Warning: Do Not Be Afraid or Discouraged
  3. The Promise: God Is With You Wherever You Go

1. The Command: Be Strong and Courageous

God doesn’t ask Joshua to be strong—He commands it! Why? Because Joshua is stepping into a new role as leader of Israel after Moses’ death. The task ahead is overwhelming, but God calls Joshua to:

  • Trust in God’s Power, Not His Own - Strength and courage come from God, not from personal ability (Ephesians 6:10).
  • Take Action, Not Hesitate - God’s calling requires faith-driven movement (James 1:22).
  • Lead Others in Faith - Joshua’s courage would inspire all of Israel. Likewise, our obedience encourages those around us.

Application: When God calls us to something, He also provides the strength to do it. What is God calling you to be courageous in today?

2. The Warning: Do Not Be Afraid or Discouraged

Why does God warn against fear and discouragement? Because fear is the enemy of faith.

  • Fear paralyzes progress - Fear causes hesitation when God calls us to move forward (2 Timothy 1:7).
  • Discouragement drains faith - When we focus on obstacles instead of God, we lose heart (Psalm 42:11).

Joshua had every reason to fear—he faced battles, enemies, and a future full of uncertainty. But God’s presence makes fear powerless.

Application: What fears are holding you back? Instead of focusing on obstacles, fix your eyes on God’s promises.

3. The Promise: God Is With You Wherever You Go

The greatest reason Joshua could be courageous was God’s presence.

  • God’s presence brings peace - No matter where we go, we are never alone (Hebrews 13:5).
  • God’s presence gives confidence - When we trust in Him, we walk boldly (Proverbs 3:5-6).
  • God’s presence secures victory - Success in God’s eyes is obedience, not worldly results (Romans 8:31).

This same promise applies to us today. Jesus tells us in Matthew 28:20, “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Application: No matter what we face, we can be strong and courageous because God goes before us and walks with us.

Conclusion

Joshua 1:9 is not just a motivational verse—it is a divine command, warning, and promise.

  • Be strong and courageous because God has called you.
  • Do not be afraid or discouraged because God is greater than any challenge.
  • Trust in His presence because He is with you wherever you go.

What step of faith is God asking you to take today? Walk forward in courage, knowing that God is with you every step of the way.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, fill our hearts with confidence in Your promises, and give us the boldness to step into all that You have called us to do. May we trust in You completely, knowing that Your presence is our greatest source of strength. We surrender our fears to You today and choose to walk forward in faith. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.
