A Defining Choice: Whom Will You Serve?
Joshua 24:15
Introduction
Life is full of choices. Some are small and insignificant, but others define the course of our lives. In Joshua 24, Joshua gathers the Israelites for one final challenge before his death. He reminds them of God’s faithfulness and then places a decision before them:
“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
Joshua makes it clear—serving the Lord is a choice. Today, we will look at three key lessons from this passage.
1. Everyone Must Make a Choice
Joshua doesn’t allow the people to remain neutral. He says, “Choose this day.” In other words, indecision is still a decision.
Biblical Truth:
- Matthew 6:24 - “No one can serve two masters.”
- Revelation 3:16 - “Because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”
Lesson: You cannot serve both God and the world. You must choose who will rule your life.
2. The World Offers Many False Gods
Joshua warns about the gods of their ancestors and the gods of the Amorites. These represent the idols of the past and the temptations of the present.
Biblical Truth:
- 1 John 2:15 - “Do not love the world or anything in the world.”
- Exodus 20:3 - “You shall have no other gods before me.”
Lesson: Today, false gods may not be idols of stone, but they still exist—money, success, pleasure, and power. What is competing for God’s place in your life?
3. A Personal Decision Impacts Your Household
Joshua declares, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” His faith wasn’t just personal—it impacted his entire family.
Biblical Truth:
- Deuteronomy 6:5-7 - “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength. Impress them on your children.”
- Acts 16:31 - “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”
Lesson: Your commitment to Christ influences those around you. What example are you setting for your family and friends?
Conclusion
Joshua’s challenge is still relevant today:
- You must make a choice - Will you follow God or the world?
- Beware of false gods - What is pulling your heart away from Christ?
- Your decision impacts others - Your faith can shape your household and community.
What choice will you make today? Will you say, like Joshua, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”?
Prayer
Father, we thank You for giving us the freedom to choose You. Help us to turn away from the false gods of this world and fully commit to serving You. May our lives reflect our decision to follow Christ, and may our households be a testimony of Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
