Confidence in Prayer
2 Corinthians 5:7
Scripture: 1 John 5:14-15 “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”
Introduction
Prayer is one of the greatest privileges of the Christian life. It is our direct line of communication with God, yet many struggle with doubt when they pray. Does God hear us? Will He answer?
In 1 John 5:14-15, we are given a powerful truth—when we pray according to God’s will, we can have confidence that He hears and answers. Today, we will explore the confidence we have in prayer, the importance of praying according to God’s will, and the assurance of His response.
1. The Confidence We Have in Prayer
John begins by saying, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God.” This confidence is not based on our worthiness but on God’s faithfulness.
- Confidence Through Christ: Hebrews 4:16 tells us to “approach God’s throne of grace with confidence.” Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we have direct access to God.
- Confidence That God Hears: Many wonder if their prayers even reach God, but John assures us that He hears us when we pray according to His will.
- Confidence That God Cares: God is not distant or uninterested. He desires a relationship with us and welcomes our prayers.
We do not pray with uncertainty, we pray with faith, knowing that our loving Father listens.
2. Praying According to God’s Will
John emphasizes a crucial condition: “If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”
- God’s Will Over Our Desires: Prayer is not about convincing God to do what we want but aligning our desires with His plans.
- Seeking God’s Will in Scripture: The Bible reveals God’s will—His desire for righteousness, love, and salvation. When our prayers align with His Word, we can pray with confidence.
- The Example of Jesus: In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). This should be our heart’s attitude in prayer.
Instead of demanding our way, we should seek to pray in harmony with God’s perfect will.
3. The Assurance of Answered Prayer
John continues, “If we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.” This is a bold promise!
- God Always Answers: His answers may be “yes,” “no,” or “wait,” but He always responds in wisdom and love.
- Faith in God’s Timing: Sometimes, God’s answer is delayed, but that does not mean He has not heard. We must trust His perfect timing.
- Believing Without Seeing: Mark 11:24 says, “Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Faith trusts in God’s promises even before seeing the results.
When we pray in faith, we rest in the assurance that God is at work, even if we do not see immediate results.
4. Living with Confidence in Prayer
Since we have this promise, how should we live?
- Pray Boldly: Do not hold back in prayer. God invites us to come to Him with all our needs and concerns.
- Pray with Trust: Surrender your desires to God, trusting that His plans are greater than ours.
- Pray Continually: 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Pray without ceasing.” Prayer should be a daily part of our relationship with God.
Conclusion
God wants us to approach Him with confidence, knowing that He hears and answers prayer. When we pray according to His will, we can trust that He will respond in the best way.
Let us pray with boldness, trust in His wisdom, and believe that He is faithful to answer!
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of prayer. Help us to pray with confidence, seeking Your will above our own. Strengthen our faith to trust in Your perfect answers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
