Competence from God

2 Corinthians 3:5

Scripture:

“Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.” — 2 Corinthians 3:5 (NIV)

Introduction

In a world that often tells us to rely on our own abilities, intelligence, and strength, it is easy to believe that our success and worth come from ourselves. But in this verse, Paul reminds us of a foundational truth: our sufficiency, our competence, and our ability come from God alone.

Today, we will explore three key lessons from this verse:

  1. We Are Not Sufficient in Ourselves
  2. Our Competence Comes from God
  3. God Empowers Us for His Purpose

1. We Are Not Sufficient in Ourselves

Paul, despite being a great apostle, acknowledges that he is not competent in himself. If Paul, with all his wisdom and experience, confesses this, how much more should we recognize our dependence on God?

  • Our strength has limits.
  • Our wisdom is incomplete.
  • Our righteousness is not enough.

The world encourages self-sufficiency, but Jesus teaches dependence on God. In John 15:5, Jesus said, “Apart from me, you can do nothing.” True strength comes when we surrender our self-reliance and lean on God’s power.

2. Our Competence Comes from God

Paul states clearly: “Our competence comes from God.” This means that:

  • Our abilities, gifts, and talents are from Him.
  • Our success is not by our own merit, but by His grace.
  • Our wisdom and understanding come through His Spirit.

When we recognize that our competence comes from God, it removes pride and fills us with gratitude. Instead of boasting in our achievements, we acknowledge Him as the source of all we have. As Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, we must trust in the Lord rather than our own understanding.

3. God Empowers Us for His Purpose

God does not just give us competence for our own benefit—He empowers us to fulfill His calling. Paul continues in the next verse (2 Corinthians 3:6), saying that God has made us “ministers of a new covenant.”

This means:

  • God equips us for the work He calls us to do.
  • He strengthens us where we are weak (2 Corinthians 12:9).
  • He uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.

No matter what He has called you to—ministry, leadership, serving others, or simply living faithfully—He will provide the strength and ability you need.

Application: How Can We Rely on God’s Sufficiency?

  1. Acknowledge Your Need for Him - Humility is the first step to receiving God’s strength.
  2. Pray for His Strength - Seek His guidance in all you do.
  3. Depend on the Holy Spirit - Let Him work through you.
  4. Give God the Glory - Recognize that all you accomplish is because of Him.

Conclusion

We are not sufficient in ourselves, but our sufficiency comes from God. He empowers, strengthens, and equips us for every task He sets before us. Let us walk in faith, relying not on our own ability, but on His power working through us.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that we are not sufficient in ourselves, but our sufficiency comes from You. Help us to depend on Your strength, trust in Your wisdom, and walk in obedience to Your calling. May all that we do bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
