Be Strong and Courageous: God Is With You
2 Chronicles 32:7
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him.”
Introduction
We all face moments in life when fear and discouragement threaten to overwhelm us. Whether it’s a personal challenge, a difficult decision, or an unexpected crisis, it can feel like we’re standing before a vast army we cannot defeat. In 2 Chronicles 32, King Hezekiah and the people of Judah found themselves in such a situation. The powerful king of Assyria, Sennacherib, had invaded their land with a massive army, intending to destroy them. Yet, in the face of overwhelming odds, Hezekiah declared a message of hope: “Be strong and courageous… for there is a greater power with us than with him.”
This verse offers three key lessons that apply to our lives today:
- Strength and Courage Come from God
- Fear and Discouragement Must Be Rejected
-
God’s Power Is Greater Than Any Enemy
I. Strength and Courage Come from God
“Be strong and courageous.”
The command to be strong and courageous is found throughout Scripture. But this strength and courage are not based on our abilities—they come from trusting in God’s power and faithfulness. Hezekiah knew that Judah’s strength came from their relationship with God.
- Biblical Example: In Joshua 1:9, God tells Joshua, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” This reminder of God’s presence gave Joshua the confidence to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land.
-
Application: When we face challenges, we must remember that our strength doesn’t come from our circumstances—it comes from knowing that God is with us. We can face any obstacle with courage because we are not alone.
II. Fear and Discouragement Must Be Rejected
“Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him.”
Fear and discouragement are the enemy’s tools to weaken our faith. The enemy often appears larger and more powerful than we can handle, but God commands us not to be afraid. Fear focuses on what we can see, while faith focuses on what God can do.
- Biblical Example: When David faced Goliath, the Israelite army was paralyzed by fear. But David trusted in God’s power rather than focusing on Goliath’s size. His faith gave him the courage to defeat the giant (1 Samuel 17:45-47).
-
Application: What “giants” are you facing today? Fear and discouragement may whisper that your problems are too big, but God says, “Do not be afraid.” Choose faith over fear, knowing that God is greater than any challenge you face.
III. God’s Power Is Greater Than Any Enemy
“For there is a greater power with us than with him.”
The key to Hezekiah’s confidence was his belief in God’s power. He reminded the people that while the Assyrian army relied on human strength, Judah had the Almighty God on their side. No enemy can stand against the power of God.
- Biblical Example: In 2 Chronicles 32:21, after Hezekiah’s declaration of faith, God sent an angel who destroyed the Assyrian army, and Sennacherib was forced to retreat. Judah didn’t even have to fight—the battle belonged to God.
-
Application: No matter what enemy you face—whether it’s sickness, financial struggles, relational conflicts, or spiritual battles—God’s power is greater. Trust that He is fighting for you, even when you can’t see it. Victory comes not by our strength but by God’s might.
Conclusion: Victory Through Trust in God
2 Chronicles 32:7 is a reminder that we can face any challenge with strength and courage because God is with us. We don’t have to be afraid or discouraged, no matter how impossible the situation may seem. Just as God delivered Judah from the Assyrians, He will deliver us from the battles we face today.
So when fear tries to overwhelm you, remember these words: “Be strong and courageous… for there is a greater power with us than with him.” Trust in God’s power, and watch as He brings victory in your life.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that we do not face our battles alone. Help us to be strong and courageous, trusting in Your power even when the odds seem against us. Remove fear and discouragement from our hearts, and fill us with faith to believe that You are greater than any challenge we face. We trust You to bring victory, for the battle belongs to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
