Be Still and Know: Finding Peace in God's Sovereignty
Psalm 46:10
Text: “Be still, and know that I am God, I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10, NIV)
Introduction:
In a world filled with noise, busyness, and uncertainty, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. We often strive to control our circumstances, forgetting that God is sovereign over all things. Psalm 46:10 is both an invitation and a command: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Today, we will explore what it means to be still before God, how to deepen our trust in His sovereignty, and how His power and presence bring peace to our lives.
1. Be Still—Surrender Control and Trust God
“Be still…”
The phrase “be still” means more than simply stopping physical activity—it calls us to quiet our hearts, calm our minds, and rest in God’s presence. It is an invitation to cease striving, let go of fear and anxiety, and trust that God is in control.
- Illustration: Imagine a stormy sea with waves crashing violently. Being still is like an anchor that holds a ship steady, preventing it from drifting away. God is our anchor, keeping us grounded even when life feels chaotic.
- Psalm 62:1-2: “Truly my soul finds rest in God, my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation, he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.”
Application: In moments of stress and uncertainty, pause, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that God is in control. Release your worries to Him and allow His peace to fill your heart.
2. Know That I Am God—Acknowledge His Sovereignty and Power
“…and know that I am God.”
To “know” that God is God means to recognize and trust His authority, wisdom, and faithfulness. It’s a reminder that He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and ever-present, working all things together for good. Knowing God’s character brings confidence and peace, even when life feels uncertain.
- Isaiah 46:9-10: “I am God, and there is no other, I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning.”
- Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”
Application: Strengthen your faith by meditating on God’s promises. When fear or doubt arises, declare, “I know that my God is in control, and I trust His plan for my life.”
3. God’s Glory Will Be Revealed to All Nations
“I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
This verse reminds us that God’s ultimate plan is to reveal His glory to the entire world. No matter how chaotic or broken the world may seem, God’s purposes will prevail. He will be exalted, and His name will be praised by every nation and generation.
- Philippians 2:9-11: “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow… and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord.”
- Habakkuk 2:14: “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”
Application: Live your life in a way that reflects God’s glory. Share His love with others and be a witness of His power and faithfulness, trusting that His kingdom will be established on earth.
4. Practical Ways to “Be Still and Know” in Daily Life
- Spend Time in Prayer: Set aside daily moments to pray, not only speaking to God but also listening for His voice.
- Read and Meditate on Text: Allow God’s Word to shape your thoughts and bring peace to your heart.
- Practice Silence and Solitude: Create space in your schedule to disconnect from distractions and be alone with God.
- Trust God in Uncertain Times: When life feels out of control, remind yourself of God’s sovereignty and choose to rest in His promises.
Conclusion:
Psalm 46:10 is a powerful reminder that no matter what we face, God is in control. When we choose to be still and acknowledge His sovereignty, our hearts are filled with peace and confidence. Trust that He is working all things for His glory and your good. As you quiet your heart and focus on His presence, you will experience the strength, peace, and assurance that only God can provide.
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the invitation to be still and know that You are God. In the midst of life’s challenges, help us to surrender control, trust in Your sovereignty, and rest in Your presence. Let Your peace fill our hearts and Your power guide our steps. May our lives reflect Your glory, and may we boldly proclaim Your name to all the earth. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
