Ask, Seek, Knock: The Power of Persistent Prayer

Matthew 7:7-8

Key Text:

“Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” - Matthew 7:7-8

Introduction:

Jesus, in the devotional on the Mount, encourages us to be persistent in prayer. He assures us that God is attentive to our needs and desires to bless His children. Through the words ask, seek, and knock, Jesus presents a progression of faith and persistence in our relationship with God.

Today, we will explore:

  1. What It Means to Ask, Seek, and Knock
  2. God’s Assurance of Answered Prayer
  3. The Importance of Persistent Faith

1. What It Means to Ask, Seek, and Knock

Jesus uses three action words—ask, seek, and knock—to describe different levels of engaging with God in prayer.

  • Ask - Presenting Our Needs to God - Asking is the first step in prayer. It shows dependence on God and recognizes Him as our provider (Philippians 4:6).
  • Seek - Actively Pursuing God’s Will - Seeking goes beyond asking, it involves diligently pursuing God’s presence, wisdom, and guidance (Jeremiah 29:13).
  • Knock - Persisting Until the Door Opens - Knocking represents perseverance. Sometimes, answers don’t come immediately, and we must keep knocking in faith (Luke 18:1-8).

Application: If you have been praying for something, don’t stop—continue asking, seeking, and knocking! How can we deepen our commitment to prayer and make it a priority in our lives?

2. God’s Assurance of Answered Prayer

Jesus gives a promise: “Everyone who asks receives, the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” This shows that God is a faithful Father who hears and responds to His children.

  • God’s Timing Is Perfect - His answer may be yes, no, or wait, but He always responds in love (Isaiah 55:8-9).
  • God Knows What Is Best for Us - Sometimes, we ask for things that are not in line with His will, but He provides what is truly good for us (Matthew 7:9-11).
  • Faith Unlocks the Door - James 1:6 reminds us to ask in faith, believing that God will answer.

Application: Trust that God hears you and will answer in the way that is best for you. Do we trust that God's answers are always for our good, even if they are not what we expect?

3. The Importance of Persistent Faith

Jesus teaches that prayer is not a one-time request, but a continuous conversation with God.

  • Persistence Strengthens Our Faith - The more we seek God, the closer we grow to Him (Luke 11:5-10).
  • God Rewards Those Who Diligently Seek Him - Hebrews 11:6 says He blesses those who seek Him with all their heart.
  • Waiting on God Builds Our Character - Delayed answers teach us patience, humility, and deeper trust in God’s plan (Romans 5:3-5).

Application: Don’t give up on prayer—keep seeking, keep believing, and keep trusting in God’s faithfulness. How can we cultivate a spirit of perseverance in our prayer lives, even when we face discouragement or doubt?

Conclusion:

Jesus invites us into a lifestyle of prayer and faith. When we ask, seek, and knock, we show our dependence on God and our trust in His goodness. Let us be persistent in prayer, knowing that God hears us, loves us, and will answer according to His perfect will.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Are you consistently asking, seeking, and knocking in prayer?
  2. Do you trust God’s timing and answers, even when they are different from your expectations?
  3. How can you grow in persistence and faith in your prayer life?

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise that when we ask, seek, and knock, You hear us. Strengthen our faith to trust in Your perfect timing and will. Help us to seek You with all our hearts and never give up in prayer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
