A Spirit of Grace and Supplication

Zechariah 12:10

Key Text:

“And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication, then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.” - Zechariah 12:10

Introduction:

Zechariah 12:10 is a powerful prophecy pointing to Jesus Christ. It reveals how God will pour out His Spirit, leading people to repentance and faith in the Messiah. This passage speaks of grace, supplication, and deep sorrow as people recognize the One they have pierced—Jesus Christ.

This prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus was crucified, and it will have its ultimate fulfillment when Israel as a nation turns to Christ in the last days. But it also has personal application for us today.

1. The Spirit of Grace and Supplication

  • “I will pour on the house of David… the Spirit of grace and supplication.”
  • Grace - God’s unmerited favor, which leads people to salvation.
  • Supplication - A deep longing for God, a cry for mercy and help.
  • This shows that true repentance and revival come only through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Application: Have we experienced the Spirit of grace and supplication in our own lives? Do we recognize our need for God's mercy and cry out to Him in prayer?

New Testament Fulfillment:

  • John 16:8 - “When He (the Holy Spirit) has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”
  • Ephesians 2:8 - “For by grace you have been saved through faith.”

2. Looking Upon the Pierced One

  • “Then they will look on Me whom they pierced.”
  • This prophecy directly points to Jesus’ crucifixion.
  • John 19:37 - “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
  • The piercing of Jesus’ side (John 19:34) was a fulfillment of this prophecy.

The Cross Leads to True Repentance

  • When we see Christ crucified, we recognize our sin and need for salvation.

Application: Have we truly looked upon Jesus and understood the depth of His sacrifice for us? Do we allow the cross to lead us to genuine repentance?

  • Galatians 2:20 - “I have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”

3. Mourning Over Sin

  • “They will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son.”
  • True repentance brings deep sorrow for sin.

Application: Do we feel sorrow for our sins, recognizing how they grieve God and separate us from Him? True repentance involves a change of heart and a turning away from sin.

  • 2 Corinthians 7:10 - “Godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation.”

The Good News: Mourning Leads to Joy

  • Though we mourn over our sin, God’s grace restores us.
  • Psalm 30:5 - “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.”

Conclusion:

Zechariah 12:10 is a prophecy that points to Jesus as the pierced Messiah who brings grace, repentance, and salvation. Today, we must look to Christ, receive His Spirit of grace, and allow true repentance to transform our lives.

Reflection Questions:

  • Have you truly looked to Jesus, the One who was pierced for your sins?
  • Is your heart moved by the grace of God and a desire for true repentance?

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus, the One who was pierced for our sins. Pour out Your Spirit of grace upon us. Give us hearts of true repentance and lead us to deeper faith in Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
