When Disobedience Costs the Blessing
Numbers 20:10-11
Text: Numbers 20:10-11 (NIV)
“He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, ‘Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?’ Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.”
I. Introduction: Leadership Under Pressure
- Moses was a leader who carried the burden of guiding a rebellious and complaining nation through the wilderness. This was a challenging task that required immense patience and reliance on God.
- At this point in the journey, the people were again grumbling for water, demonstrating their lack of trust in God's provision.
- Despite God’s clear instructions, Moses responded in frustration, disobeying God’s command and revealing his own human weakness.
Illustration: Leaders in any context—whether parents, managers, or ministry workers—know how challenging it can be to lead with patience and grace under pressure. We all face moments when our own frustrations and emotions can hinder our ability to lead effectively.
II. Moses’ Disobedience (Verses 10-11)
-
God’s Command:
- In Numbers 20:8, God commanded Moses to speak to the rock to bring forth water. This was a specific instruction that required obedience and faith.
- This was an opportunity to demonstrate God’s power and glory in a new way, showing the people that God was their provider, even in the wilderness.
-
Moses’ Actions:
- Instead of speaking to the rock as commanded, Moses struck it twice with his staff in anger. This act of disobedience revealed his frustration and lack of self-control.
- He also made it about himself and Aaron by saying, “Must we bring you water out of this rock?” This showed a lack of humility and a desire to take credit for the miracle.
-
The Heart Issue:
- Moses allowed frustration and pride to cloud his obedience. He lost sight of God's instructions and acted impulsively.
- By taking credit for the miracle, he failed to honor God as the true provider and distorted the message God intended to send.
Application: Have you ever let frustration, anger, or pride lead you to act outside of God’s will? When we take matters into our own hands, we often miss the opportunity to glorify God and experience His best.
III. The Consequences of Disobedience
-
God’s Judgment:
- In verse 12, God tells Moses and Aaron they will not enter the Promised Land because they did not honor Him as holy before the people. This was a severe consequence for their disobedience.
- This was a significant consequence for a faithful leader who had served God for decades. It highlights the seriousness of disobedience, even for those in positions of authority.
-
Why the Judgment Was Severe:
- Moses’ disobedience distorted God’s message to the people. Instead of witnessing God's grace and provision, they saw Moses' anger and frustration.
- God wanted to demonstrate His grace and faithfulness, but Moses’ actions communicated anger, self-reliance, and a lack of trust in God.
Illustration: Imagine a parent promising a child a gift but then delivering it with frustration and resentment. The gift’s joy would be diminished, and the child would likely feel hurt and confused.
Application: Obedience is not just about the action—it’s about the heart and the message it communicates to others. Our actions should reflect God's character and His love for His people.
IV. God’s Faithfulness Despite Human Failure
-
Water Still Gushed Out:
- Despite Moses’ disobedience, God still provided for His people. He did not withhold His provision because of Moses' mistake.
- This shows God’s faithfulness and unwavering commitment to His promises, even when we fall short.
-
Grace and Redemption:
- Though Moses did not enter the Promised Land as a consequence of his disobedience, he remained God’s faithful servant and was even honored by appearing with Jesus at the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:3).
- This demonstrates God's grace and redemption. Even when we fail, God can still use us and bring good out of our mistakes.
Application: God’s grace covers our failures, but obedience is still essential for experiencing the fullness of His blessings and fulfilling His purposes for our lives.
V. Lessons for Us Today
-
Obedience Matters:
- Partial obedience is still disobedience. We must strive to trust and follow God’s instructions completely, even when they don't make sense to us.
-
Guard Your Heart:
- Don’t let frustration, pride, or anger lead you to sin. These emotions can cloud our judgment and hinder our ability to hear and obey God.
- Proverbs 4:23 — “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
-
God’s Faithfulness:
- Even when we fail, God remains faithful. He is always ready to forgive and restore us when we repent and turn back to Him.
VI. Conclusion: Speak to the Rock, Don’t Strike It
- God invites us to trust Him and follow His ways fully, surrendering our own desires and agendas.
- When we obey with a humble heart, we glorify Him and experience His blessings in greater measure.
Prayer:
Ask God for the strength to obey, a heart free from frustration and pride, and unwavering trust in His faithful provision. Pray for the wisdom to discern His voice and the courage to follow His instructions, even when they seem difficult or unconventional.
