- 1 Thessalonians 5:23 - “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly, and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
- Genesis 1:26-27 - “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…’”

Introduction
If you’ve ever stared at yourself in the mirror and wondered, “Who am I really?”—you’re not alone. Many people define themselves by their job, looks, nationality, or even their past mistakes. But God defines you by what He created you to be: a spirit being, who lives in a body and possesses a soul.
Understanding this truth is key to walking in victory, maintaining emotional health, and living in alignment with God’s purpose. You are not just flesh and bone—you are a spirit, made in the image of God Himself!
⸻
1. You Are a Spirit
The real you is not what you see in the mirror. You are a spirit being.
- Genesis 1:26-27 tells us that God made man in His image.
- John 4:24 says, “God is spirit…” So if we are made in His image, it means we, too, are spirit beings.
- When Adam was formed from the dust in Genesis 2:7, he wasn’t alive until God breathed into him. That breath was the spirit—the divine life of God.
Why does this matter? Because your spirit is the part of you that connects to God. It’s the part that gets born again (John 3:6). When you accept Jesus, it’s your spirit that becomes a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), not your body or soul.
⸻
2. You Have a Soul
Your soul is the seat of your mind, will, and emotions. It’s your personality, thoughts, decisions, and feelings.
The soul is like the bridge between your spirit and your body. While your spirit is God-conscious, your soul is self-conscious—it’s where you reason, imagine, and choose.
- Hebrews 4:12 says the Word of God can divide between soul and spirit—meaning they are not the same.
- Your soul needs to be renewed and transformed every day through the Word of God (Romans 12:2).
This is why even after salvation, some Christians still struggle with bad habits or wrong thinking—their spirit is saved, but their soul still needs work!

3. You Live in a Body
Your body is your earth suit. It’s how you function in this physical world. Without it, your spirit and soul can’t operate here.
- 1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit…”—so take care of it.
- Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:27, “I discipline my body and keep it under control…” because he understood that the body can desire things that go against the spirit.

4. Why This Truth Matters
- Proper Identity - When you know you’re a spirit being, you won’t live based on your emotions or physical impulses. You’ll live from your new nature in Christ.
- Spiritual Authority - A spirit-led person understands their authority in Christ. You’re seated with Him in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6)—because your spirit is already there.
- Greater Peace - When you let your spirit lead, your soul and body will follow. This brings peace instead of inner chaos.
- Eternal Perspective - Your body will die, but your spirit will live forever. When you live with eternity in mind, you make wiser, holier choices today.
⸻
Conclusion
You are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body. Don’t let your body or emotions be the driver of your life. Let your spirit—filled with the Holy Spirit—lead the way.
Remember: the real you is not the outer man, but the inner man. Feed your spirit with the Word, renew your soul with truth, and discipline your body. That’s how you live a victorious, God-honoring life.

Today's Prayer
Father, thank You for creating us in Your image. Help us to live led by the Spirit, not by our flesh or emotions. Teach us to renew our minds and present our bodies as living sacrifices. May we walk in the fullness of who we are in You—spirit beings made to know and reflect You. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
