The Rise and Fall of the Antichrist

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4

Text:
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 (ESV)

“Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship…”

⸻

I. Who Is the Antichrist?

The word “Antichrist” appears in the epistles of John, though Paul and Daniel speak of him under different names:
• “Man of lawlessness” (2 Thess. 2:3)
• “The Beast” (Revelation 13)
• “Little horn” (Daniel 7:8)

Definition:
The Antichrist is a future world leader who will rise during the end times, opposing Christ and deceiving the world. He embodies rebellion against God and will demand worship.

📖 1 John 2:18

“Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come…”

John distinguishes between the spirit of the antichrist (already at work) and the Antichrist (a specific individual to come).

⸻

II. What Will the Antichrist Do?

1. Deceive the World

“He will cause a great delusion…” (2 Thess. 2:10-11)

• He will perform false signs and wonders.
• He will promise peace but bring destruction.
• Many will believe he is a savior, but he is a destroyer.

2. Demand Worship

“He sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.” (2 Thess. 2:4)

Like Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar, and Caesar, he will crave divine status.

3. Persecute Believers

Revelation 13:7 - “It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people…”

He will turn the world against the Church.

⸻

III. How Do We Respond?

1. Do Not Be Deceived
We are in an age of misinformation, manipulation, and moral compromise.

Matthew 24:24 - “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.”

Stay in God’s Word.
Test every spirit.
Beware of teachings that sound spiritual but reject Christ’s lordship.

2. Stand Firm in Christ
Paul tells the Thessalonians:

“Stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught.” (2 Thess. 2:15)

Christians must be rooted—not swayed by fear, trends, or false hope.

3. Rest in Victory
The Antichrist may rise, but his time is limited.

“The Lord Jesus will kill him with the breath of his mouth and bring him to nothing by the appearance of his coming.” (2 Thess. 2:8)

Jesus doesn’t need an army.
One breath and it’s over.

Closing Illustration

Imagine a man building a tower in the middle of a storm, claiming it will stand forever.
People gather, cheer, and call him a genius.
But a flash of lightning—just one from heaven—strikes it down.

That’s the Antichrist. He will rise. He will boast.
But Christ returns, and it’s not a battle.
It’s a blowout.

Closing Prayer

Father, we thank You for the truth of Your Word.
Give us eyes to see, ears to hear, and hearts that are not easily shaken.
In a world where deception grows, anchor us in the truth of Jesus Christ.
Strengthen our faith, preserve our witness, and remind us daily that
no power in heaven or earth can stand against our risen King.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
