The Call to Prioritize God’s Work

Haggai 1:5-10

Key Scripture:

“Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Consider your ways. You have sown much, but harvested little, you eat, but you do not have enough, you drink, but you are not filled with drink, you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm, and he who earns wages earns wages to put into a bag with holes.’” - Haggai 1:5

Introduction

The book of Haggai was written after the Israelites returned from exile and began rebuilding Jerusalem. However, they had neglected the rebuilding of the temple, focusing instead on their own homes and comforts. Haggai delivers a message calling the people to reflect on their priorities. Their lives were marked by frustration and dissatisfaction because they had neglected God’s work. This passage challenges us to reflect on our own priorities and calls us to put God first in all things.

1. The Call to Reflect on Our Ways (Verse 5)

  • God’s Invitation to Self-Examination:
    • The Lord says, “Consider your ways.” The Israelites were frustrated, sowing much but reaping little. They ate and drank, but were still unsatisfied. This reflects a life where even hard work doesn’t bring fulfillment. Sometimes, our lives feel unfulfilled because our priorities are misplaced.
    • Matthew 6:33 - “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
    • When we put God first, He promises to provide for all our needs.

2. The Consequences of Neglecting God’s Work (Verses 6-9)

  • A Picture of Unfulfilled Labor:
    • The people worked hard but saw little return. God shows them that their struggle was not due to lack of effort, but because they neglected His temple. The neglect of God’s house caused their lives to lack purpose and satisfaction. God withheld His blessing because their focus was wrong.
    • Psalm 127:1 - “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.”
    • When we focus on building our own lives without prioritizing God’s work, our efforts are in vain.
  • The Root Cause: Neglecting God’s House:
    • The Israelites were focused on their own houses while God’s temple lay in ruins. This reflected their spiritual neglect. Just as the temple symbolized their relationship with God, neglecting it signified neglecting Him.
    • We must ask: Are we prioritizing God’s work and relationship in our lives? Or are we focusing on our own comfort?

3. The Call to Put God First (Verse 8)

  • God’s Command to Rebuild the Temple:
    • God commands the people to go to the mountains, gather wood, and rebuild His temple. This was an act of obedience that would bring God pleasure and glorify Him. Rebuilding the temple was a way for them to show their commitment to God and prioritize His work over their own.
    • Matthew 6:19-20 - “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth… but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”
    • When we prioritize God’s kingdom, we store up eternal treasures that will never fade.

4. The Blessing of Obedience (Verse 10)

  • The Result of Putting God First:
    • In verse 10, God explains that because of their disobedience, He withheld His blessing. The heavens withheld dew, and the earth withheld its fruit. The lack of satisfaction in their lives was due to their neglect of God’s work.
    • Malachi 3:10 - “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse… and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”
    • When we obey God and put Him first, He blesses us abundantly. Obedience opens the door to God’s provision.

Conclusion

Haggai 1:5-10 challenges us to reflect on our priorities. Are we focusing on our own needs and desires while neglecting God’s work? God promises that when we put Him first, He will bless our lives abundantly. Just as the Israelites were called to rebuild the temple, we are called to rebuild our commitment to God and His work in our lives. When we do this, we will experience His blessing and fulfillment.

Reflection Questions:

  • Are there areas in your life where you are prioritizing your own comfort over God’s work?
  • How can you actively choose to put God first in your daily routine?
  • Are there areas where you feel unsatisfied—could this be a result of misplaced priorities?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your call to examine our priorities. Help us to put You first in everything we do. Forgive us for the times we have neglected Your work, and teach us to live in obedience to Your commands. May we experience Your abundant blessings as we commit ourselves to Your service. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
