Speak, Lord, for Your Servant Is Listening
1 Samuel 3:9-10
Scripture Text: 1 Samuel 3:9-10 (NIV)
“So Eli told Samuel, ‘Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”’ So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Then Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’”
Introduction:
Have you ever struggled to hear from God? You prayed, waited, and wondered, “God, are You speaking?” In 1 Samuel 3, young Samuel hears God’s voice for the first time—but he doesn’t recognize it at first. This moment becomes a turning point not only for Samuel but for the entire nation of Israel. It’s not just about hearing, it’s about listening with the heart of a servant.
1. God Still Speaks
- In verse 1, we’re told that “the word of the Lord was rare, there were not many visions.”
- Though times were dark spiritually, God was not silent—He was waiting for someone ready to listen.
- This reminds us that God hasn’t stopped speaking, we’ve just grown distracted, busy, and full of noise.
🔹 Application: Make room in your life for silence, prayer, and time in the Word. You may discover He’s been speaking all along.
2. God Often Speaks in Unexpected Places and to Unexpected People
- Samuel wasn’t a prophet—he was a boy, serving in the temple.
- God bypassed the older, more experienced Eli and spoke to someone young and unqualified.
- God delights in using unlikely vessels to deliver His message.
🔹 Application: Never disqualify yourself from being used by God because of your age, past, or position. If your heart is available, God can speak through you.
3. Recognizing God’s Voice Requires Spiritual Guidance
- Samuel heard the voice but didn’t know it was God until Eli gave him instruction.
- Sometimes we need spiritual mentors to help us recognize what God is doing in our lives.
🔹 Application: Surround yourself with wise, godly people who can discern the voice of God and help you grow in it.
4. Listening Is a Posture of the Heart
- Samuel responds: “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”
- He doesn’t say, “Lord, I have something to say,” but “Lord, I am ready to hear.”
- God honors the heart that says, “Whatever You want to say, I’m ready to obey.”
🔹 Application: Don’t just seek a word from God—seek to obey it. God speaks to listeners, not just hearers.
5. When God Speaks, Lives Are Changed
- Samuel went from an apprentice to a prophet. After this encounter, the Bible says “the Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and He let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground” (v. 19).
- One moment of divine communication shaped the destiny of a nation.
🔹 Application: One genuine word from God can change your entire direction. Stay close. Stay quiet. Stay ready.
Conclusion:
God is still calling today. Maybe He’s been calling your name over and over, and you’ve just not recognized it. Like Samuel, let’s say: “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”
Today’s Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we quiet our hearts before You. Forgive us for the noise, the distractions, and the times we’ve failed to recognize Your voice. Today, we say, “Speak, Lord.” We are listening. Open our ears, our hearts, and our lives to Your Word. Help us not only to hear but to obey. Use us for Your glory, no matter how young or unqualified we feel. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
