Our Righteousness vs. God’s Grace
Isaiah 64:6
Key Text:
“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags, and we all do fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” - Isaiah 64:6
Introduction
Isaiah 64:6 is a sobering reminder of humanity’s sinful condition before a holy God. Even our best efforts at righteousness are insufficient and tainted by sin. This verse highlights the need for God’s grace and the salvation found only in Jesus Christ.
1. The Reality of Our Sinfulness
Isaiah declares that “we are all as an unclean thing.” In the Old Testament, being “unclean” meant being separated from God’s presence. Sin corrupts every part of our being, making us unworthy to stand before a perfect and holy God.
Paul echoes this truth in Romans 3:23, saying, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” No one is exempt from this reality.
2. Our Righteousness is Like Filthy Rags
The phrase “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” emphasizes that even our best works are flawed by sin. We might do good things, but they are not enough to earn salvation or God’s favor. Without Christ, our moral efforts are like dirty garments—unable to cover our guilt.
3. The Fragility of Life and Sin’s Power
Isaiah compares humanity to a fading leaf, blown away by the wind. This illustrates two things:
- Life’s temporary nature - Just as leaves wither and fall, our lives are brief. We cannot rely on our own strength.
- Sin’s destructive force - Like the wind carries away dead leaves, sin separates us from God and leads to spiritual death.
4. The Need for God’s Grace
This verse ultimately points us to our need for a Savior. If our righteousness is not enough, then salvation must come from God alone. Praise God that He provided the answer through Jesus Christ!
- Romans 6:23 - “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
- Ephesians 2:8-9 - “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.”
We are not saved by our own goodness but by God’s mercy. When we put our faith in Jesus, He clothes us with His righteousness, making us acceptable before God.
Conclusion
Isaiah 64:6 humbles us by showing that we cannot earn salvation on our own. Our righteousness is not enough, but God’s grace is more than sufficient. Instead of relying on our works, we must fully trust in Jesus Christ, who gives us true righteousness and eternal life.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that our own righteousness is not enough to save us. Thank You for Your grace through Jesus Christ. Help us to rely on Him alone for salvation and to live lives that reflect Your holiness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
