Living in the Overflow of God’s Love
1 John 4:19
Text: 1 John 4:19 - “We love because He first loved us.”
Introduction:
Love is one of the most powerful forces in the world, and as Christians, love defines who we are. But the love we show others is not something we create, it is a response to the love God has already poured out on us. Today’s message focuses on understanding God’s love and how it empowers us to love others.
I. The Source of Love
-
God Is the Origin of Love (1 John 4:8)
- Love began with God because God is love.
- His love is not based on our goodness but flows from His nature.
-
God’s Love Demonstrated Through Jesus (Romans 5:8)
- God showed His love by sending Jesus to die for us while we were still sinners.
- This sacrificial love is the highest expression of true love.
-
His Love Is Unchanging (Jeremiah 31:3)
- God’s love is eternal and unconditional.
- Nothing we do can make Him love us more or less.
II. Our Response to God’s Love
-
Loving God in Return (Matthew 22:37)
- God’s love compels us to love Him with all our heart, soul, and mind.
- Loving God is a joyful response to His grace and mercy, not about rules or religion.
-
Loving Others (1 John 4:20-21)
- True love for God is reflected in how we love others.
- We cannot claim to love God if we harbor hatred or unforgiveness toward others.
- Jesus commands us to love even our enemies (Matthew 5:44).
-
Loving Ourselves (Psalm 139:14)
- God’s love reminds us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
- Seeing ourselves through God’s eyes helps us walk in confidence and self-acceptance.
III. Living in the Overflow of God’s Love
-
Love as a Lifestyle (Ephesians 5:1-2)
- As imitators of God, we are called to walk in love daily.
- This means showing kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.
-
Love in Action (1 John 3:18)
- Love is not just words but actions.
- We demonstrate love through service, generosity, and compassion.
-
The Impact of Love (John 13:35)
- Jesus said the world will know we are His disciples by our love for one another.
- Love has the power to heal, restore, and transform lives.
IV. The Power of Receiving God’s Love
-
Breaking Free from Fear (1 John 4:18)
- God’s perfect love casts out fear.
- Knowing we are loved by God helps us face life’s challenges with confidence.
-
Walking in Forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32)
- Receiving God’s forgiveness empowers us to forgive others.
-
Living with Joy and Peace (Romans 15:13)
- God’s love fills us with joy and peace, even in difficult circumstances.
Conclusion:
We love because God first loved us. His love is the foundation for our relationship with Him, with others, and even with ourselves. As we receive His love, let it overflow into every area of our lives.
Closing Prayer:
Father, thank You for loving us first. Help us to receive and walk in Your love. Let Your love flow through us, touching those around us and bringing glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
