Jehovah Shalom – The Lord Is Peace

Judges 6:24

Main Scripture:
Judges 6:24 (NIV)
“So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.”

Introduction: When Peace Seems Impossible

We all want peace.
But real peace isn’t just the absence of noise, war, or stress.
Peace is the presence of God in the middle of chaos.

The name Jehovah Shalom — “The Lord is Peace” — was first revealed during one of Israel’s darkest, most dangerous times.
And it came to a man who was not at peace at all: Gideon.

1. God Reveals Peace in Chaos

Judges 6 opens with Israel under oppression by the Midianites. Their crops were stolen, their people were hiding, and their faith was shaken.
Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress — hiding, afraid, and uncertain.

And it’s in that very moment, the Angel of the Lord appears and calls Gideon a “mighty warrior.”

Gideon responds with questions, doubts, and fear.
Yet after this encounter, Gideon builds an altar and calls it:
Jehovah Shalom - The Lord is Peace.

He didn’t name God that because the war was over.
He called God “Peace” while the enemy still surrounded them.

💡 Application:
You don’t have to wait for the storm to stop to have peace.
Jehovah Shalom brings peace in the storm, not just after it.

2. Peace Comes From God’s Presence, Not Circumstances

We often say things like:

  • “I’ll have peace once I get that job.”
  • “I’ll feel peace after the doctor calls.”
  • “I’ll be at peace when things calm down.”

But peace isn’t found in a paycheck, diagnosis, or smooth schedule.
Peace is found in God.

📖 Isaiah 26:3
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.”

Gideon’s peace came when he realized God was with him.

💡 Application:
Where are you looking for peace? In a plan? A person? A perfect outcome?
Redirect your focus to the presence of God.

3. God’s Peace Doesn’t Remove Fear — It Overcomes It

After encountering Jehovah Shalom, Gideon still had doubts.
He still asked for signs. He was still nervous.
But something changed: he moved forward anyway.

Peace doesn’t always mean you feel fearless — it means you know Who goes with you.

📖 Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything… And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

That kind of peace isn’t logical.
It doesn’t make sense to the world.
It’s supernatural.

💡 Application:
You might still feel nervous — but if God has called you,
you can move forward with peace that guards your heart like armor.

4. The Ultimate Peace Came Through Jesus

Jehovah Shalom reached its fullest expression through Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.

📖 Ephesians 2:14
“For He Himself is our peace…”

Through the cross, Jesus made peace between God and man —
and now, He offers that peace to all who trust in Him.

📖 John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you… Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

💡 Application:
If you’ve never surrendered to Jesus, the first step to true peace is peace with God.
Once you have that, no situation can steal your inner calm.

Closing Encouragement

  • Are you in a chaotic season? Call on Jehovah Shalom.
  • Is your heart restless? Invite the God of peace to rule in your thoughts.
  • Do you feel like Gideon — overwhelmed and unqualified?
Remember, God shows up in winepress moments and calls us by a greater name.

Peace is not the absence of struggle — it’s the presence of God.

Closing Prayer

Father, we thank You that You are Jehovah Shalom — the Lord our peace.
You meet us in fear, doubt, and chaos, and You call us into Your presence.
Teach us to trust You more deeply.
Let Your peace guard our hearts and minds through every storm and season.
We receive the peace that Jesus gives, and we declare that no weapon formed against us will steal our peace.
In the name of Jesus, our Prince of Peace, Amen.
