God Gives More Grace
James 4:6
Text: James 4:6 (NIV) - “But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’”
Introduction
Grace is one of the most beautiful gifts God gives us. It is His undeserved favor, His strength in our weakness, and His mercy when we fail. In James 4:6, we are reminded that God gives more grace—but only to the humble. James also warns that God opposes the proud. This verse teaches us two essential truths:
- The Danger of Pride
- The Power of Humility
- The Abundance of God’s Grace
I. The Danger of Pride
James tells us that God opposes the proud. Why is pride such a serious issue?
- Pride separates us from God - Proverbs 16:18 warns, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” When we rely on ourselves instead of God, we set ourselves up for failure.
- Pride blinds us to our need for grace - The Pharisees in Jesus’ time were proud and self-righteous, and as a result, they missed God’s grace (Luke 18:9-14).
- Pride leads to conflict - James 4:1-2 speaks about fights and quarrels that come from selfish desires. Pride puts self above others, leading to division.
Application:
Are there areas in your life where pride is keeping you from fully relying on God? Ask Him to reveal and remove any prideful attitudes.
II. The Power of Humility
James also says that God shows favor (or gives grace) to the humble. Humility is the key to receiving more of God’s grace.
- Humility acknowledges our need for God - A humble heart recognizes that everything we have comes from Him (John 15:5).
- Humility leads to spiritual growth - 1 Peter 5:6 says, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.”
- Humility strengthens our relationships - Philippians 2:3 teaches us to “value others above ourselves.” Humility brings peace and unity.
Application:
How can you practice humility today? Start by acknowledging your dependence on God and seeking His will above your own.
III. The Abundance of God’s Grace
The best part of this verse is the promise: “But he gives us more grace.”
- God’s grace is greater than our failures - No matter how many times we fall, His grace is always available (Lamentations 3:22-23).
- God’s grace empowers us to overcome sin - Romans 6:14 says, “For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.”
- God’s grace is available to all who humble themselves - If we recognize our need for Him, He will fill us with His strength (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Application:
Are you relying on your own strength, or are you drawing from God’s unlimited grace? Surrender to Him, and He will provide all you need.
Conclusion
James 4:6 teaches us a simple but powerful truth:
- God opposes the proud - Pride leads to destruction.
- God gives grace to the humble - A humble heart receives His favor.
- God’s grace is always enough - No matter our struggles, He gives more grace.
Let us choose humility over pride and open our hearts to receive the abundant grace God freely offers.
Amen!
