Giving with a Willing Heart

Mark 12:44

Key Scripture:

“They all gave out of their wealth, but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” - Mark 12:44

Introduction:

In Mark 12:41-44, Jesus observes people giving their offerings at the temple. Many rich individuals contribute large amounts, but a poor widow drops in two small copper coins. Jesus calls attention to her gift, saying she gave more than all the others because she gave sacrificially, out of her poverty, and with a willing heart.

This story teaches us that God values not the size of the gift, but the heart behind it. Today, we will explore:

  1. The Difference Between Giving Out of Abundance and Giving Sacrificially
  2. God Measures the Heart, Not the Amount
  3. Trusting God with Everything

1. The Difference Between Giving Out of Abundance and Giving Sacrificially

  • The rich gave large amounts, but their offerings were not a sacrifice—they still had plenty left.
  • The widow gave all she had, demonstrating complete trust in God’s provision.
  • True generosity is not about how much we give, but how much it costs us to give.

Application: Do we give to God and others only when it is convenient, or do we give sacrificially, trusting in His provision?

2. God Measures the Heart, Not the Amount

  • Jesus did not condemn the wealthy for giving, but He highlighted the widow’s heart of faith.
  • God looks beyond numbers—He sees our motives, love, and trust.
  • 2 Corinthians 9:7 says, “God loves a cheerful giver.” It is not about pressure but about a heart willing to give.

Application: When we give—whether money, time, or service—are we doing it for recognition, or out of love for God?

3. Trusting God with Everything

  • The widow gave all she had to live on, showing complete faith in God’s provision.
  • True faith means trusting God to meet our needs, even when giving seems risky.
  • Matthew 6:33 reminds us to “seek first His kingdom,” and God will provide for us.

Application: Are we holding back from God because of fear, or are we trusting Him with everything?

Conclusion:

Mark 12:44 teaches us that God values sacrificial, faith-filled giving. The widow’s offering was small in human eyes but great in God’s eyes.

Let us give with:

  1. A willing heart, not just out of abundance.
  2. A motive to please God, not people.
  3. A trust that God will provide for all our needs.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Do I give to God and others sacrificially, or only when it is convenient?
  2. Am I more focused on the amount I give or the heart behind my giving?
  3. How can I grow in trusting God with everything I have?

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for teaching us the value of sacrificial giving. Help us to trust You completely and give with hearts full of faith and love. May our generosity reflect our gratitude for all You have done. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
